Scott Beck and Bryan Woods return to the horror genre in 2024 with Heretic. The writers of A Quiet Place, who shifted to sci-fi with 2023's dinosaur film 65, are back with a new scary movie. Heretic is about two female Mormon missionaries who become the focus of a strange man's games. The movie is set to star Yellowjackets' Sophie Thatcher and The Fabelmans' Chloe East as the two girls, with Hugh Grant playing the creepy older man.
Heretic was granted an interim agreement to continue production during the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023.
The film already premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival in September and will hit theaters right before Thanksgiving. Heretic also received mostly favorable reviews for its festival appearance. It has an 88% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising all three main performers in the movie, making it much greater than the "escape room" scenario in which it places its protagonists.

Nosferatu is a remake of the 1922 silent film of the same name from directorF. W. Murnau. Robert Eggers' Nosferatu reimagining is arriving in 2024 to give horror movie audiences a fresh look at an iconic story. Lily-Rose Depp stars as a young woman named Ellen who becomes the target of the ancient vampire's stalking in the film, while the titular vampire is played by Bill Skarsgård. Nosferatu's cast is incredibly exciting, thanks to the appearances of Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, and Ralph Ineson.
Nosferatu is based on Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, F. W. Murnau's 1922 silent German Expressionist vampire film starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok.
Focus Features has confirmed plans to release Nosferatu on Christmas Day 2024. Interestingly, Willem Dafoe played the vampire in the movie Shadow of the Vampire in 2000, a film that played out like a biopic of the original Nosferatu's making, but supposing that Max Shreck was a real vampire cast in the movie. It is also a re-teaming of Eggers and Defoe, who starred in the director's The Lighthouse. The story itself remains a slight mystery, and even the first trailer doesn't reveal much.
10 Adrift — TBD 2024
Directed By Darren Aronofsky
Audiences might also be treated to a horror movie from Darren Aronofsky and Jared Leto in 2024. Adrift has been in development for years and is the second movie Aronofsky and Leto have worked on together after Requiem for a Dream. The horror film is described as a supernatural ghost story set aboard a ship. It is an adaptation of a short story by Koji Suzuki, and the Jared Leto-led movie is set to be produced by horror studio Blumhouse.
Production was expected to begin in 2023, making a 2024 release date for Adrift possible. However, since the news first broke about the movie, nothing has seemingly started. Instead, it seems that Aronofsky's next movie will be a crime drama called Caught Stealing. However, nothing has been said about Adrift not happening. As the year comes to a close, though, it is seemingly unlikely that this horror movie will have a 2024 release.
9 Dust Bunny — TBD 2024
Directed By Bryan Fuller
One of 2024's horror movies features a Hannibal reunion of sorts. Bryan Fuller, who developed Hannibal, worked on Dust Bunny, which stars Mads Mikkelsen, who played Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the NBC series. The horror thriller movie follows an eight-year-old girl who asks her neighbor to help her kill a monster under her bed after she thinks it has eaten her family. Aside from Mikkelsen, the cast of Dust Bunny includes Sigourney Weaver and David Dastmalchian.
Dust Bunny was one of the few productions to be granted an interim agreement to continue filming through the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023.
With Fuller in the director's chair, the excitement levels have been high. This would be his feature film debut after working exclusively in television up to this point. However, despite the production starting in June 2023 and continuing throughout the strike, there has been no release date set by the studio. Mads Mikkelsen said the movie has been shot, so fans are just waiting for a release date and whether it will be a theatrical release, or if it might end up going straight to streaming.
8 Faces of Death — TBD 2024
Directed By Daniel Goldhaber
The upcoming horror film Faces of Death comes from director Daniel Goldhaber. After making his directorial debut with Cam in 2018, Goldhaber received excellent reviews for 2022's crime thriller How to Blow Up a Pipeline. 2024 is expected to be Goldhaber's return to horror as Faces of Death's story follows a woman who discovers violent videos that recreate death scenes from movies online.
Faces of Death, which doesn't have a release date yet, is a remake of the 1978 movie by the same name.
Faces of Death stars Euphoria's Barbie Ferreira, Stranger Things' Dacre Montgomery, Saved by the Bell's Josie Totah, singer Charli XCX, and The Blackening's Jermaine Fowler. The new film reportedly honors the first film in the series but updates it for the digital age as the woman who discovers them works for a YouTube-like platform and finds the videos re-enacting the murders from the first movie. However, it isn't clear if they are real murders or faked. Filming is completed, but a release date is still unknown.
7 The One — TBD 2024
Directed By Jaki Bradley
The Scream franchise's Melissa Barrera will continue her horror movie dominance with another project in 2024 known as The One. The film, directed by Jaki Bradley, follows Barrera's Taylor as she becomes a contestant on a reality TV dating show. Taylor's experience takes a turn as she gets down to the final three and is terrified of not finding love.

There is no information about this movie's release at all. While the movie was announced in 2023 (via Variety), it doesn't appear that it ever started filming, and the chances of it getting a 2024 release are almost non-existent at this time. However, Barrera has kept busy, and she's set to appear in the Andy Warhol biopic, The Collaboration, which is in post-production.

Based on the popular video game franchise, specifically Silent Hill 2, the story of Return to Silent Hill follows James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine) returning to the town in search of his lost love after receiving a mysterious letter. However, when he returns to the town, he finds that it has been changed by an evil force and as he gets deeper into the town, he discovers terrifying creatures.
Return to Silent Hill serves as a reboot and the third installment in the Silent Hill film series.
Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw) stars alongside Irvine as James' lost love interest. The film was shot from April 2023 through February 2024, and has been waiting for its release since that time. Return to Silent Hill was supposed to arrive in theaters in 2024, but there has been no release date, nor has there been a trailer since it wrapped filming, making it seem like a 2024 release might be out of the question at this time.

Another exciting 2024 entry lies with Witchboard, a reimagining of the classic 1986 horror movie. The story is about a woman named Emily and how her connection to an ancient coven of witches puts her life in danger through the discovery of a pendulum board. Madison Iseman plays Emily in Witchboard, while Stranger Things breakout star Jamie Campbell Bower portrays the occult expert hired to try and save her life when she finds an ancient pendulum board.
The horror movie remake comes from director Chuck Russell (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob), and it was expected to arrive in 2024. Filming started in April 2023, and it kept shooting through the strike. It has since premiered at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival on July 26, 2024, and was planned for a 2024 release, although a release date has still not been given. It has a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on the festival screening.

The Strangers Trilogy Will Explore Unanswered Questions From The Original Movie
Exclusive: The Strangers: Chapter 1 director, Renny Harlin, teases how the trilogy will relate to the original films and what questions it answers.
The problem is that it has been four months since the first movie came out, and nothing has been said about Chapter 2's release date. The first movie of the new trilogy was a minor box office success, making $47.8 million on an $8.5 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). However, its 21% Rotten Tomatoes score might make the studio a little leery about the sequels. Director Reny Harlion explains the sequels "go in completely different directions than the first chapter, and they become more epic." (via THR)

The next installment of the Insidious franchise was supposed to come in 2024 with Thread: An Insidious Tale. The movie is a spinoff from the main Insidious franchise that tells an entirely separate story. Thread: An Insidious Tale's cast includes Kumail Nanjiani and Mandy Moore as a married couple who use a spell to travel back in time to prevent their daughter's death, which has worse consequences than imagined.
Thread: An Insidious Tale is the sixth installment in the Insidious franchise.
Thread: An Insidious Tale is written and directed by Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy, Moon Knight), and a 2024 release was expected given the usually quick turnaround time for this franchise's movies. Sadly, it doesn't look like this movie will arrive in 2024, and there is no word on when and if it will arrive at all. The movie has not reportedly started shooting yet and there has been no updates on its production status since its announcement.

Josh Brolin is teaming up with director Zach Cregger for what could have been one of 2024's best horror movies — Weapons. Building on the success of Barbarian in 2022, Cregger's next movie is an original horror epic that has drawn comparisons to Magnolia. The story is a multi-character epic that follows the disappearance of school kids, police corruption, generational trauma, blood rituals, and religious abuse, all in a small Florida community.
Pedro Pascal was previously cast in the main role for Weapons but had to drop out because of his Fantastic Four shooting schedule.
The cast includes Brolin, Julia Garner, Aiden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, Austin Abrams, and more. With production beginning in early 2024, many fans hoped it might arrive by the end of the year. That not only didn't happen, but New Line Cinema revealed a release date much further into the future. Cregger guaranteed a theatrical release, but it will be a long wait. According to the studio, the film will not hit theaters until January 16, 2026.
